Riley Martens Grable

After an overdose led to respiratory failure and complications affecting multiple organ systems, Riley Martens Grable became critically ill. He required intubation and a ventilator to help him breathe, and his prognosis was uncertain.

Once Riley was stable enough to leave the acute care hospital, his mother chose Vibra Hospital of Denver for the next stage of his care. Vibra Hospital of Denver is a critical care hospital specializing in treating patients with complex medical and respiratory needs.

Riley’s care plan brought together physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, rehabilitation therapists, and other specialists. Together, they focused on supporting his breathing, closely monitoring his complex medical needs, preventing complications, and helping him gradually rebuild strength and function.

Over the course of more than two months, Riley made steady and meaningful progress.

Despite an uncertain prognosis, Riley was successfully weaned from the ventilator and began breathing on his own. As his respiratory condition improved, his tracheostomy was removed. He also regained the ability to eat safely, allowing his feeding tube to be removed.

Therapy became an important part of Riley’s recovery. With support from the rehabilitation team, he worked to improve his strength, mobility, and ability to complete everyday activities. By the time he left Vibra, Riley was able to walk more than 150 feet on his own. He had also made cognitive progress and was able to understand and respond to those around him.

Having made significant gains, Riley was discharged to an inpatient rehabilitation facility to continue rebuilding his strength and working toward greater independence.

As he looks ahead, Riley remains focused on both his physical recovery and his sobriety.
